The Winter Open House had about 15 prospective members show up, 13 of which hung around for Belly Busters. Of that group, as many as 13 showed up for class and it looks like 8 of them will join the Club. Two others are expected to join in the fall when they return from up north. When you see the newest members be sure to welcome them to the Club and make them feel right at home.
Once again a number of members didn't signup but did attend and were served a belly buster while those members who were working did without. Only 40 people signed up and we ran out after serving 67 belly busters, 13 of which went to prospective members. The 4 members working went without. That means that 18 members who did not signup got a hot dog. As a result, we are going to return to the rule that says that if you didn't signup, you go to the back of the line. We will be using two different color tickets, one for those who signed up and a different color for those who didn't. Those who didn't signup will get served after those who did. While we don't like to deprive anyone of a hot dog, if you don't signup, unfortunately, we may have to.
After the last regular game it looks like the semi-finals will be between Leon Lambert's team, Brian Bogue and Bonnie Bish, and Jon Peele's team, Ron Swindler and Debby Barrett, in the Alligators and Bears Divisions and between Lee Kline's team, Tom Jenkins and Rosalie Ross, and Hans Momkes' team, Doris Cole and Glen Brown in the Cougars and Dragons Divisions. The semi-finals will be held the afternoon of Saturday February 20 with the finals on Sunday afternoon. Be sure to attend and cheer on your favorite team. Interestingly only Hans Momkes' team was undefeated and no team lost only one game. The winners in the Alligators and Bears Divisions were decided on the total points. In the Alligator's Division Barb Smith's team also won four games and in the Bears Division both Leo Schumacher's team and Dave Kruger's team also won four games. I can't remember when that many division winners were decided by points
Tony and Janet Vassallo, Tournament Managers, persevered in the face of Mother Nature and were able to play the Finals Saturday afternoon in frigid weather. But that was nothing compared to semi-final men's game in the morning when the temperature never did reach 45. The tournament started off with 6 women's teams and 8 men's teams. The finals for the women saw the team of Betty Hamilton, Sue Skoglund and Ruth Pivonka playing Beth Forbes, Judee Lund and Joyce Kerschbaum. Beth's team won by the score of 20 to 4. On the men's side the finals were between Mike Maneilly, Colin Pope and Tom Jagel and the team of Hans Momkes, Jesse Hadaway and Eberhard Dietel. This was a very close game with the Maneilly team ahead by three points going into the final end. But don't count Hans' team out. They scored four points in the final end to win the tournament by a single point. Congratulations to the Beth's and Hans' teams
Tracy and Bob Wulbrecht, event managers, saw about 100 people enjoy a very nice ham dinner. Plenty of good food with lots of ham left over. Unlike many of our other recent events it was a beautiful afternoon with bright sunshine and the high in the mid fifties. After the meal was completed, 48 members bowled a ten end game. The festivities were over a little before 5 PM. Thanks go out to Tracy, Bob and their hardworking committee for a job well done. |
The Annual Meeting will be held the afternoon of Friday February 19 in the Clubhouse. The Nomination Committee has recommended the following for Officers and Directors for the 2010-2011 season: President - Brian Smith, Vice President - Beth Forbes, Secretary - Mary Rooney, Treasurer - Bill Schaefer, Director of Games - Dave Kruger, Director of Grounds - Ron Macey, Social Director - Ellie Macey and Membership Director - Lee Kline. Ruth Pivonka remains as Director of the House and Sue Roberts remains as Director of Long Range Plans. Be sure to attend. The trip to Clearwater will be leaving the Club about 7:15 on Tuesday February 23. It looks like there will be 51 members aboard the bus and the Club will field 16 teams. Skips, their teams and the rink assignment for the first game will be announced on the bus. You will play the second game on the rink to the right of the first game. Mount Dora moves one rink to the right while Clearwater moves one rink to the left. Remember to bring both your bowls and lunch. Clearwater will serve a meal after the second game and we should be back at the Club around 7:30. Once again Gary Skoglund will be the manager for Major Marsh on Thursday Februsry 25. This is a day where the rules are slightly different when it comes to the delivery of the jack. Simply put, the jack isn't centered. There will be three games, two prior to lunch and a games after. Scoring is based on games won, points less than 13 and "extra" (points greater than 12) points plus ends won. There is a small entry fee. Be sure to signup. Belly Busters will be served after pill bowling on February 27 and March 27. Remember, we are back to checking to see if you signed up before selling you a ticket and those signed up get served first. So please signup. Both the New Board and the Old Board will meet on Monday March 1st. This is basically a transition meeting where the old board member hands off to the new board member. The first real meeting of the newly elected members will be on Saturday March 20 after pill bowling. Members are encouraged to attend all board Meetings. The St Patrick's Day Social will be held on Sunday March 14. Jim and Ann Reilly will be your hosts. It's a little early so be sure to look for the signup sheet with the particulars for the day but be sure to mark it on your calendar. Sy Carkhuff will be filling in for Bill Baird and running the Men's Singles Tournament. The games will be held the week of March 15 with the finals on Saturday March 20. Again it is too early to know the specifics of the tournament but look for the announcement to be posted. As usual, Sy will be looking for jack setters so if you have not signed up, please consider being a jack setter. Bob Wulbrecht is the Tournament Manager for the Women's Singles. The tournament will be held the week of March 22 with the finals on March 27th. Again, if you not bowling in the tournament consider being a jack setter. So ladies, signup to bowl.
Mother Nature is still being uncooperative. The very heavy rains of the night before flooded the rinks and they were still too wet to use by noon the day of Bill's Game. Initially it looked like the game was going to be cancelled but Earl Shaner found an open date. So on April 2, Good Friday, Bill's Game will be played. More about that next month.
It is not too early to start thinking about the Annual Banquet. Elllie and Ron Macey, the event managers, tell me this year's theme is going to be the "Fifties", or more specifically, "Rock Around the Rinks". So get your old, good time clothing out of moth balls and see if they still fit. This year the tickets will be $25 and go sale March 2. Be sure to mark your calendars for the evening of April 7. Don't worry I'll remind you once more. | .
