Janet and Dale Swartzlander and their committee pulled off a great 4th Social. The day started with Earl Shaner, Director of Games, calling for a slightly different version of the old favorite "Crack the Jack". In Earl's version the exclusive objective in the 4th end was to hit the jack and get four points for each time you did so. The mat was placed on the two meter mark and the jack on the opposite two meter mark with the delivered bowls being cleared from the rink. No "blockers", cool! After the game it was time for a cold drink, or maybe two. It was hot and the perspiration was running freely and everyone was thirsty. While some members congregated on the veranda and enjoyed a cool beer, most quickly found a table in the air conditioned clubhouse. About 100 members showed up to celebrate the Country's birthday. Sloppy Joes were the treat of the day. After lunch Earl presented prizes to the game winners. The team that got the combination of the most points plus the points for hitting the jack received a towel monogrammed with MDLBC thanks to Elaine Swindler, pictured below.
![]() Thanks Janet and company for a very nice day.
Sue Roberts, President, moved into her new Mount Dora home on July 16. Due to the move, Sue's address and phone number has changed. Her new phone number is 357-3712, her e-mail address is Sue@GeorgeSueRoberts.com and her address is 2441 Bar Harbor Bay, Mount Dora, FL 32757-8871. Yes, she did take George with her. |
The Parks and Recreation program originally scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursday evenings in July did not get enough folks signing up and has been cancelled, at least for the time being. That means there is plenty of open rinks for pill bowling on those evening. Belly Busters will be served after bowling on Saturday July 26 and August 30. In June, 30 hot dogs were sold, 2 more than the number of rolls purchased. It worked out fine but, please sign up so George will know how many rolls to buy. The Board meets after bowling on August 2. This is a great time to fine out just how the Board operates and what their concerns are. Plan to attend. The evening Mixed Pairs tournaments are scheduled for Wednesday July 30 and August 27. These are the last mixed pairs tournaments of the summer, so be sure to put a team together and sign up. The games start at 5 PM. As usual Bridge, Mah Jongg, Euchre and Bunco will be played at the usual dates and times. Since there will not be an issue of the Member Only page published in August, I'll include the first half of September here. There will be a Labor Day social on Monday September 1. Plan on it and be sure to sign up. The Board will hold its regular meeting after bowling on Saturday September 6. The Summer Mixed Triples Tournaments is scheduled for three consecutive Wednesdays starting on September 10 at 8:30 AM.
We are going on vacation during most of the month of August and there will not be an August issue of the Members Only page. It will resume the middle of September. |
MOUNT DORA LAWN BOWLING CLUB Minutes of Board Meeting 7/5/2008
The meeting was called to order by President Sue Roberts at 10:45 a.m. Other Board members in attendance were Vice President Brian Smith, Secretary Jackie Williamson, Games Director Earl Shaner, Grounds Director Mac McKean, Social Director Linda James and Long Range Planning Director Wally Green. Board members not in attendance were Treasurer Claire Weston, Membership Director Joe Bender and House Director Janet Vassallo. There were 5 Club members in the audience.
Audience comments were as follows:
1 The rinks are in great condition due to all the recent rain.
2 Jane Keneipp suggested a cost-saving measure of turning off the water heater when not in use. It was agreed to give it a try. Function managers will need to remember to turn on the circuit breaker prior to their function, e.g., the day before a party, and to turn it back off afterwards.
Minutes of the June 7, 2008 Meeting of the Board were approved with the following corrections: changing the name of the rubico company from Ten S to 10-S and the location from Lake Wales to Pompano Beach.
Treasurer’s Financial Report – not available. Report was just received and will be posted by Claire on her return.
President’s Report
1 Thanks to the 4th of July Committee for a fun party.
2 Sue read a letter from Lawn Bowls USA, our provider of Henselite bowls, advising that the price of bowls will be increasing to $310 for off-the-shelf bowls and $390 for special ordered bowls, effective immediately. Prices do not include sales tax and shipping.
3 Parks and Recreation class for July was cancelled due to low enrollment. They will try again in the fall.
Vice President’s Report
Brian advised that his computer was inoperable, so please contact him by phone, not email.
Secretary’s Report
Jackie reported that she was working on the Directory with Ken Lay and had just given him her changes. She will also be trying to establish a set procedure for future address and phone number changes.
Games Director’s Report
1 46 bowlers played a game of Firecracker at the 4th of July Tournament.
2 The 6/25 Triples Tournament was rained out. There were 6 teams signed up.
3 The Summer Pairs Tournaments begin on July 30 and continue in August.
4 Earl met with a rep. from the Fast Dry Co. (rubico distributor) who indicated that the rinks should be kept moist, rolled and brushed. He also indicated that the club had received a proposal from this company in November 2006 for an underground watering system costing $120,000.
5 Sue asked Earl to remind Pill Board Coordinators about their responsibility for locking up everything before they leave the grounds (including bathrooms and jack boxes, etc.)
Grounds Director’s Report
1 Mac expressed thanks to Ron Swindler for fixing the pipe between rinks 10 and 11 and for identifying that the water cooler was still under warranty, so it will be repaired.
2 Several sprinklers were found to be full of “gunk” inside, so they were taken apart and cleaned. He will check again before deciding whether a filter is needed for the pump.
3 Sue noted that our new rinkskeeper, Paul Hutchings, is interviewing for a pilot’s position. In his absence, his neighbor, Bruce Hart, is filling in. If Paul gets the pilot’s job, Bruce would be a natural replacement. Bruce is not working through Snelling but would be asking for $13/hr.
Social Director’s Report
Linda reported that the 4th of July and Memorial Day parties were both successful. Ninety people attend the July 4th party.
House Director’s Report
Sue reported that the kitchen had been exterminated and any sightings of bugs should be reported to Mary Rooney or to Sue. She also reminded everyone in charge of social functions (including Bunco, Euchre, Bridge, etc.) that all garbage must be taken out when the function is over.
Long Range Planning Director’s Report
Wally reported that there were no contributions to the Capital Fund, but he will put something in the newsletter again in the fall.
Old Business
1 $750 was received from the City of Mt. Dora for their share of the tree removal expense.
2 Nothing further on the sign. John Adams is still not here. He will follow up when he is.
New Business
1 Mt. Dora 2010 – We received a letter regarding planning efforts for the city’s Centennial activities. Brian will attend the planning meetings and report back to the Board.
2 Former Associate member Carole Wiegman is rejoining as an Associate member (no initiation fee, full social dues). Sue will contact her.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:00 noon
The next meeting will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2008 after pill bowling (approx. 10:45 a.m.)
Jackie Williamson, Secretary
